In fact, the Sultans of Sweat may give new meaning to their other team title - Double Dynamite. This year, there may be some tense moments when Sam and Dave are inducted. At $1,250 a ticket, it's clear that the stakes are not minor, even if the children are. In 1987, there was an ugly moment when two of Jackie Wilson's surviving children (one of them 11 years old) were escorted from the dinner because they hadn't bought tickets and because they weren't the children of the Wilson widow accepting the award. Other problems have resulted because many artists had multiple marriages. Come to think of it, that was one lively dinner.
Also that year, there was tension when only the lead singers of the Drifters were set for induction (eventually, other members were included). Sometimes it's been personal: That same year, Diana Ross forewent the Supremes' induction, reportedly refusing to appear with Mary Wilson, while the Beach Boys' induction was marred by a drunken Mike Love interrupting the fired Brian Wilson's acceptance speech and generally making a fool of himself. Sometimes this has been played out around legal disputes - Paul McCartney skipped the Beatles' 1988 induction because of business disagreements with George Harrison and Ringo Starr. In seeking to honor crucial figures in contemporary music, the Hall of Fame occasionally has been forced to deal with the nonmusical aspects of the artists' careers.
Two deceased blues artists - bottleneck guitarist Elmore James and pianist Professor Longhair - will be inducted as "early influences." Guitar pioneer Leo Fender, songwriter Doc Pomus and promoter Bill Graham, all of whom died last year, will be inducted in the nonperformer category.
Tonight, the seventh annual induction dinner for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame will be held at the Waldorf Astoria Ballroom in Manhattan, honoring Booker T and the MG's, Bobby "Blue" Bland, the Isley Brothers, the Jimi Hendrix Experience, the Yardbirds, Johnny Cash, and Sam and Dave.
